The House of Graham Beck, known as a leader in South Africa’s Cap Classique production, is breaking new ground with the launch of its Artisan Collection Pinot Meunier 2022. This innovative release marks a significant milestone in the South African wine landscape, as it’s the first commercially available single-varietal Pinot Meunier fermented under cork, using the Agrafe method for secondary fermentation.
The inspiration behind this wine began with the discovery of a small parcel of Pinot Meunier vines in the Robertson region, a rare find given that only 15.9 hectares of this varietal exist in all of South Africa. This grape, often overshadowed by its more famous relatives, is celebrated in the Champagne region of France, where it accounts for 31% of plantings. Known for its frost resistance, thicker skin, and ripe fruit flavors, Pinot Meunier is often blended in sparkling wines, but Graham Beck saw the potential for a single-varietal Cap Classique.
Led by Founding Winemaker and COO Pieter Ferreira and Cellar Master Pierre de Klerk, the winemaking team embraced this opportunity to showcase the lesser-known grape. A stroke of luck followed when another small parcel of Pinot Meunier vines was offered from Elgin, allowing them to craft a unique blend of 70% Robertson fruit and 30% Elgin fruit.
One of the most innovative aspects of the Artisan Collection Pinot Meunier 2022 is its use of the Agrafe method.
Traditionally, sparkling wines undergo secondary fermentation under a crown cap. However, for this wine, a cork is used, held in place by a metal staple known as an agrafe. This method allows the wine to develop more complex flavours and a creamier texture during its two-year lees ageing process.
It’s the first time this technique has been used for a 100% Pinot Meunier Cap Classique in South Africa, further setting this wine apart as a true pioneer.
The Pinot Meunier 2022 is a Blanc de Noirs, meaning it’s a white wine made from black grapes, with a delicate, slightly pink hue. Upon opening, expect aromas of white peach, red apple, and young berries, with a hint of spice. As the wine opens, subtle floral notes emerge, adding complexity to the bouquet. On the palate, the wine is both vibrant and creamy, with flavors of ripe red apple, grapefruit, and almonds. The lively acidity balances the richness, leading to a long, lingering finish.
The Graham Beck Artisan Collection Pinot Meunier 2022 is a testament to the winery’s commitment to innovation and excellence. By highlighting the unique qualities of Pinot Meunier and experimenting with traditional winemaking techniques, Graham Beck continues to push the boundaries of Cap Classique production, offering wine lovers a fresh perspective on this often-overlooked grape.
With only 150 bottles being shipped to the UK in January 2025, this Pinot Meunier is a rare gem. Wine enthusiasts and collectors will need to act fast to secure a bottle, available through Walker & Wodehouse.
